We class ourselves as an extended family not a breeding kennel as such, we produce only 1 litter per year. Our Shiba Inu's live and run as part of our family, most of our Shiba puppies go to families as pets, keeping show quality puppies for ourselves, but occassionaly show quality puppies are available with conditions on their purchase.

Keiko Kennels is a NZKC Registered breeder.

Our aim is to give other people the opportunity to love and enjoy this great little breed the Shiba Inu just as we do. We show our Shiba Inu's at championship levels to promote this lovely little dog, and to ensure that they are up to breed standard.

My interpretation of the Shiba Inu.

Their movement is light, elastic, springy yet powerful and ascertive. A good Shiba will move at speed and be able to jump high. They are very loyal, show affection and enjoy being a family member with an independant spirit which makes them fascinating. They are cat like in many aspects and are renowned hunters and are very clean with little or no odour.

Shiba Inu History

Recent DNA analysis confirms that this is one of the oldest dog breeds, dating back to the 3rd century BC.
Originally, the Shiba Inu was bred to hunt and flush out small game, such as birds and rabbits. However, it is now primarily kept as
a pet both in Japan and abroad.
In 1936, the Shiba Inu was declared a natural monument of Japan through the Cultural Properties Act. Despite efforts to preserve the breed, the Shiba nearly became extinct during WWIIdue to a combination of bombing raids and a post-war distemper epidemic. All subsequent dogs were bred from the only three surviving bloodlines, known ,

In 1954, an armed service family brought the first Shiba Inu to the United States. In 1979, the first recorded litter was born in the United States. The Shiba was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1992 and added to the AKC Non-Sporting group in 1993.

The word  Inu or ken in Japanese simply translates as “ Dog”. It is not uncommon for the breed to be called The Shiba Inu (柴犬 also called the Shiba Ken) is the smallest of the six original and distinct breeds of dog from Japan.
